You are what you listen to

How much of our lives is shaped by our early music experiences? My children were the motivating drive for the veering of my whole career in music from adult to kid material. They're young adults now, but my work continues to be mainly in the kid/family genre because singing for and with children continues to delight and inspire me, and because it connects me to others in many fun and rewarding ways.

The songs I choose to share with children are both silly and serious, with upbeat, positive messages. They are meant to honor a wide range of cultures, feelings, and experiences. They reflect the tone of kindness and respect that we strive for in our home.

I watch in awe my grown son and daughter making their way in the world, following their hearts, heading toward goals, overcoming obstacles with confidence. They seem to always have music playing--now it's the Red Hot Chile Peppers, David Byrne, Weird Al, techno sound, some original themes, and a bit of Vivaldi. Their choices continue to influence my own in this ever-expanding musical world we all share.

  1. Hi, Lisa. I agree with you. We are what we introject, may be food, air, music or either pollution. As a child, I used to listen to tales presented in a musical way. I just put the records in my jukebox and started to dream about the sounds and payed attention to the stories. Later, I started to listen to my sisters records. Some were weird, others were great. And between these records I found one that changed my life forever. I was 7 and the record was from a latin music group, called Tarancón. I couldn't understand spanish right, but there was one word in that songs that remained forever carved in the depths of my heart: Libertad! It was when I started to gain contact with the adult world. And I can say, no doubt, it changed my life forever. And your songs, as I can see, feed the children with the desires of love, unity and freedom. Important qualities that make us human beings. Lucky children are your listeners...they will have the chance to make the difference!

    My hearts follows with you,

    Mau.

  2. "Libertad" What a pivotal moment in your life, and how this word has influenced your music compositions. Freedom to express who you are, be yourself fully, and to reach for the stars in your creative pursuits.

How fortunate for you to have a sister whose choices in music you had access to, and from this your own preferences took root. And judging from your glorious, soulful, fantastic work, you were blessed with an inspiring, motivating family environment.

I want to introduce you and your work here in this blog, so that readers can hear for themselves, and get in on being treated to your music and stories!
